Upper School Pi Day Activities

In celebration of Pi Day, students across Upper School mathematics classes participated in a series of creative classroom activities centered around the famous mathematical constant π (pi).

Our students began exploring the fascinating world of π through engaging projects designed to highlight both the creativity and real-world significance of mathematics. Each course approached the celebration in its own unique way, allowing students to combine mathematical thinking with artistic expression and research. Students designed imaginative Pi Skyliners, creating structures that incorporated circular designs and the concept of π. Through this activity, students connect geometry with creativity and real-world architecture.

Another group of students created colorful Pi Pennants, decorating their designs with interesting facts, patterns, and symbols related to π. The pennants brought vibrant mathematical energy into the classrooms. Some students constructed Pi Mobiles, carefully designing hanging models that showcased circles and geometric balance while demonstrating how mathematical ideas can be transformed into visual designs.

Moving into higher grades, students created Pi Poster Projects, researching the history of π and exploring its applications in areas such as astronomy, physics, engineering, and technology. These projects helped students see that π is far more than just a number—it is a fundamental constant used throughout science and mathematics.

Meanwhile, students expressed their creativity through Pi Artistic Plates, combining mathematical inspiration with artistic design. The beautifully decorated plates highlighted the elegance and infinite nature of π while showcasing students’ creativity.

The displays of posters, artwork, and mathematical designs transformed our learning spaces into vibrant celebrations of mathematics. These activities encouraged students to explore mathematical ideas beyond formulas, helping them appreciate the beauty and creativity that mathematics can inspire. Pi Day classroom activities continue to remind us that mathematics is not only about solving problems, it is also about curiosity, creativity, and discovering patterns that shape our world.

Student-led Quarterly Magazine

Upper School Journalism Class

Perhaps more than ever before, it is essential that our students are developing the skills needed to understand the world around them and consider how the news we encounter is created and consumed. Upper School students in our Journalism elective build those skills through practical application in that they not only learn about a range of reporting styles and text types but also create their own pieces. These graded assignments culminate in the production of a Quarterly Magazine, which is shared with the student body and made available for all to peruse in our school library.

To start the course, students examined some of the main concepts surrounding the reality of being a journalist and the main aspects to be aware of and consider. How do we decide what constitutes newsworthiness? How do we verify the reliability and veracity of our sources? How do we protect against bias and prejudice in our own reporting? This led students to create two magazine feature articles connected to issues pertinent to our school community. The result was the Quarter One magazine, released in October, which covered topics such as study habits, sleep, cultural events, school ASAs, and student life. This first edition was edited by Muxi Y., with all the contents taken from student-created writing.

Building upon the success of this first collection, we diversified our approach by examining biographical, investigative, and narrative pieces. In each case, this started with an exploration of the text type and real-World examples before students had the opportunity to exercise their creative skills in putting together their own work. At each junction, students were able to draw from their understanding of the text type and apply it to issues they relate to and care about in their own lives. The Quarter Two publication (released in January) is a resource that the entire community can benefit from. This time, the magazine was co-edited by Muxi Y., Carol C., Doris S., Doreen W., and Jessie Z.

Aside from their achievements with the Q1 & Q2 magazines, Journalism students have been supporting our younger Tigers by editing their work for the G3 magazine. The skills students are developing in their English, writing, editing, and collaboration are substantial. Their skills in critical thinking, analysis, interpretation, and global awareness may stay with them for a lifetime.

Lower Primary Morality Class

To help students develop self-management skills and healthy habits, our Grades 1–3 Morality classes recently launched a fun and engaging activity: “I Can Manage My Schoolbag.”

/// 书包太重的信号,你发现了吗?

/// Is Your Backpack Too Heavy? Here's How to Tell.

In class, students were shown a picture of a child carrying a backpack. Together, they observed: Is his back straight? Does he walk with ease? Is he smiling or frowning? Through this simple exercise, they quickly learned the telltale signs of an overloaded backpack—hunched shoulders, tired steps, or a worried expression.

So how can we keep our backpacks both light and organized? The teacher introduced the Five-Step Backpack Organization Method:

    Pack only what you need – Use your CJ and class schedule to decide what to bring; remove anything unnecessary.

    Heavy items go in first – Place textbooks and folders against your back for better balance.

    Medium items in the middle – Notebooks, readers, and other medium-sized items go here.

    Small, soft items in outer pockets – Pencil case, etc.

    Water bottle in the side pocket – Always tighten the cap to prevent leaks!

Working in small groups, students then put these steps into practice. From a pile of belongings, they picked out their "daily essentials" and removed items that no longer needed to be in their bags—last semester's textbooks, certificates, toys. Seeing their "brand new" backpacks, the sense of accomplishment was written all over their faces.

/// 打卡挑战,争做“书包小管家”

/// The 5-Day Challenge: Become a Backpack Keeper!

To wrap up the activity, students were invited to take on a special challenge—a 5-day "Backpack Keeper" mission:

  • 每天背起书包时,感受是否沉重压肩;

    Each morning, check if the backpack feels too heavy or presses on your shoulders.

  • 检查书包里有没有明天用不到的东西;

    Make sure there's nothing inside that you won't need for the day.

    Pack your bag before bed and upload a photo to Seesaw. Ten Minutes Each Night, a Habit for Life.

    Those who complete the challenge will earn a Tiger Dojo award—a small token recognizing their growing independence and perseverance.

A schoolbag may seem small, but it carries more than just learning materials—it carries the first steps toward responsibility and independence. Through this activity, students learned to assess, organize, and persist. They also learned to take ownership of their belongings. We believe that when these habits take root, they will grow into a more organized and confident approach to learning.

ECE Interesting Lesson

The students explored different landforms through hands-on art and science activities. To begin, they learned about famous mountains and discussed how mountains are formed and how they shape the land around us. As part of this exploration, the students created scenes of well-known mountains in China using a variety of craft materials. This creative activity helped them visualize mountain landforms while also encouraging careful observation, imagination, and discussion.

As the lesson continued, our conversation about landforms led naturally to a discussion about volcanoes. This opened up an exciting opportunity to connect geography with science. To deepen their understanding, the students made miniature volcano models and explored how eruptions happen by using baking soda, vinegar, and red food colouring. Watching the bubbling “lava” flow from their volcanoes helped them see a simple model of a volcanic eruption in action.

Throughout the lesson, students were engaged, curious, and eager to share their ideas. They asked thoughtful questions and made connections between the mountain landscapes they created and the volcanic landforms they investigated. By combining art, discussion, and a practical experiment, the lesson gave students a meaningful way to understand landforms and how they are shaped by natural processes. This lesson supported both creativity and scientific thinking, while making learning about geography exciting and memorable.
